4 Self-Care Tips For Your Job Search

Looking for a job can feel like a marathon, and at some stage, you’re going to hit the wall. Why? Because you are overwhelmed and stressed out with the hundreds of:

I’ve been on the job searching merry-go-round and hit the wall, so I know how you feel. I know what it is like to have to apply for multiple short-term contracts just to stay employed. Can you imagine having to do this throughout your career? Every couple of months, you’ve got to fight and apply for another contract. More resumes, more cover letters, more interviews, and it’s never-ending. This scenario is very stressful.

How do you cope with this kind of stress? My answer is by practising self-care, and here are four suggestions you can put in place to give you some very needed time out from your job search. This way, I hope, you will avoid hitting the wall.

Tip 1: Go and explore!

There’s a whole big world out there, so use it to your benefit. You could:

The message is… Get out of your head and away from your computer. Go out and explore, even if it’s for five minutes.

Tip 2: Take care of your health!

We all know that we need to look after our health. Yes? But, if you are like me, you get distracted by a long list of tasks and your health is neglected. I don’t have a new and fantastic way to improve your health in five minutes a day. I do know that just doing the basics is enough. So….

Tip 3: Find a social outlet!

I love being at home in my own space with all my personal things around me and could happily stay closeted like this. But, I make an effort to get out of my comfort zone and nurture my relationships with friends, family and the wider community. Why? Relationship building is important. Mixing with other people improves your networking and communication skills. This will help you with your interviews. Also, you never know who you might meet with the perfect job lead for you.

Tip 4: Schedule personal downtime!

In today’s electronic world, we are bombarded with information all day at high speed. Does this sound like your routine? It certainly sounds like mine, so I use my Outlook calendar to remind me to get up and go do something like:

Now! Why have I gone to the trouble of talking about looking after yourself? You need strength and stamina to get to the end of a successful job search – physically and emotionally.

When you are being interviewed for your “dream” job, you will make a strong impression on the employer because you have looked after yourself. This will increase your odds of being the candidate offered the job, which is the goal of all job seekers.
